1891 census...Aged 5, he was living at Hibbs Green, Lawshall with his Father- Walter [28] a carpenter born Stanningfield, Mother- Clara [29] (née GURLING) born Lawshall, Sister- Alice M. [7] born Lawshall, Brother- Harry [3] born Lawshall, Brother- Albert [8 months] born Lawshall. 1901 census...Aged 15, an agricultural labourer, he was living at Lawshall Street, Lawshall with his Widowed mother (horse hair weaver), brothers Harry and Albert, sister Alice M. and Brother- George [8] born Lawshall, Brother- Herbert [4] born Lawshall, Sister- Bertha [9 months] born Lawshall. His father seems to be registered dead Q1-1898 Sudbury [4A:490]. 1911 census...Aged 25, still single, a farm labourer (as were all his brothers) he was living at Shimpling Road, Lawshall with his widowed Mother, brothers Harry, Albert and George and sister Bertha. There are no Lakenheath connections in the above. His sole legatee was his mother so it seems he died unmarried, so perhaps the family moved to Lakenheath after the 1911 census. The memorial certainly has him in the Manchester Regt. |

He enlisted in Lakenheath, giving his residence as Bury St Edmunds. Originally in the Royal Fusiliers he was transferred to the Manchester Regiment. His battalion moved to billets in Basseux on 3rd April where training was carried out in preparation for the pending assault on the Hindenburg line, but it appears that Arthur had been attached to the 21st Mortar Battery the whereabout of which have not been found for that time. Since he died of his wounds it seems impossible to ascertain where and when he was injured. The site of the cemetery was chosen in May 1916. It was used from June 1916 to May 1917 by the 20th and 43rd Casualty Clearing Stations, in February 1917 by the 1/1st South Midland, and from April to June 1917 by the 32nd. The whole of plots VII, VIII, IX and X were filled in April and May 1917, the months of the Battles of Arras. |
